    The final hurdle.........

Well, tomorrow is when Dan is off to Edinburgh, for the final tests to see if he is fit and able to go into the Army. He is certainly feeling the strain, and is really worried in case he dosen't pass! To say that he will be gutted, is an understatement!!!!!
I have to get up at 5am, so I can take him to the train station.
    I'm just as nervous!!!!!
So everybody, please keep fingers, toes, anything you can, crossed, and pray to whoever you believe in, to get Dan through these next couple of days.
Friday is when we find out if he has made it or not!!!!!Confused

    My college course

Well, tonight was the first day of my college course. It is just the health and safety part of it for this week and next Thursday.
I was really excited to be getting started,Open-mouthed
However, as we were waiting for people to turn up, the tutor was just chatting, and only made references to Nail Technicians and Reflexologists!!!
I said to her that I was doing the Hot Stone Therapy, and her face dropped! She said that there were not enough people to run the class, and it had been cancelled, and I should have been informed!!!!
Clearly, I hadn't received any phonecalls!
She said that the only holistic therapy they were running, was the Reflexology, but she thought that it was full.
So she went and made a phonecall, and when she came back, she said there were no spaces left!!Sad
But, as it was the fault of the college for not informing me, and, as she was taking the class, if I wanted to do it, then she would enrol me.
Obviously, I said yes! I would have been gutted if I had to come home, I was so looking forward to it!!
But at least I'm doing something, so I still get to be a student,Tongue out

    Two down......

Dan passed his second interview, this morning, yey!!!!Open-mouthed
He is going to Edinburgh on 1st October to do his fitness tests and to have a full medical.
This is the last hurdle he has to get over to get into the Army, so don't uncross those fingers just yet!!!!Surprised

    Update.......

Just a quick update on Dan's quest to join the Army.
He went to the army careers office yesterday morning, to discuss his job options, and find out what he needs to do next.
He has to research a bit about the army, and find out why our troops are posted in Iraq and Afghanistan etc, and he has to work out how far a mile and a half is, and run it, and time himself. He can already do this run in 8 or 9 minutes, but he is trying to better this time.
He then has an interview next Tuesday afternoon, to discuss this, among other things.
If he passes that interview, he will be given another date for another interview, which will then lead to him having to go to Edinburgh to do his fitness tests and have a full medical assessment.
Should he pass all these tests, then he will be sent to Surrey to start his basic training, on 17th November. This will be for 14 weeks.
After that, he will then go to Hampshire, to train in his chosen trade, for 30 weeks.
So, keep your fingers crossed for him to get through all these stages without any problems.Open-mouthed
    I will keep you informed!!!!!

    Mixed emotions...........

My son, Dan, decided a couple of months ago, that he wanted to join the army, now that he has completed his painting and decorating apprenticeship.
I was a bit shocked by this decision, as he had not discussed it with me, but, he is nearly 21, and is capable of making his own mind up, (most of the time!!Tongue out).
Anyway, he went to the army careers office, had a chat with them.
He decided that he wanted to do military engineering and train to be an electrician and mechanic, too, and they said that because of the grades he acheived in his GCSE's when he left school, he was more than qualified, and if he wanted a bigger challenge, they could put him forward for a higher level of mechanics, which means that, once he was fully qualified, then he would be sent out into the battlefield to fix tanks and helicopters that needed attention there, rather than be based in a barracks garage, or where ever it is they do the lower level of mechanics.
So, anyway, he was really excited about this, and all he had to do next, was go to our GP, and get him to disclose his medical records and fill in a couple of forms, and send them back to the army.
That was about a month ago, and this morning, I got a text from Dan, while I was at work, saying that the army had just rang him, and his application has been accepted!!! He was buzzing!!!Open-mouthed
I am really pleased and excited for him, as I know how much he wants this, but, selfishly, as a Mother, I was a bit gutted, as it means that he is going away!!!!!Sad
He has been working away in Carlisle for the last 3 weeks, and that was hard enough for me, I missed him soooo much, so how will I cope with him being away for months at a time? I'm not looking forward to that part!!
However, I am bursting with pride at what Dan has acheived.
He was on a very slippery slope when he was in his early teens, he was forever in trouble at school, always playing truant, giving the teachers loads of grief, to the point, that many of his teachers flatly refused to teach him at all!!!! And he was forever being put into isolation at school for his behaviour, which only made him nick off school even more!!
He got involved in drugs, and he was so bad, that I almost gave up on him, as I couldnt see that he would ever get out of this lifestyle!!! But, in the back of my mind, I knew that if I was to give up on him, then he would have no-one to keep him motivated, as many other people that should have been supportive to him, were actually very negative and made him feel worthless, which in turn, made him go more and more off the rails.
Even some of his teachers said that he will never amount to much!!!!! The times I wanted to go and knock those teachers out....Angry
However, even though he hardly attended school, he still got high grades in his exams, which just proves that he had the ability, just not the motivation, and if the teachers had been more supportive, then his grades would have been much higher.
It was the hardest few years of my life, and his, but the lifeline that saved him, was an offer of an apprenticeship, 3 years ago. And, even though it was still hard going at times, he stuck at it, and turned his life completely around, and he is now a very stable and confident young man.
And a time served painter and decorater!!!! ( an excellent one at thatWink).
I cannot even put into words just how proud I am. I don't even think that there is a word big enough!!!!Open-mouthed
So, mixed emotions, for my girls and me, but I'm sure we will learn to cope with it.Confused
And, I hope one day, that those "teachers", will get to see, that my son DID amount to something.
    Someone very special!!!!!!!Open-mouthed
